Shortly about how my career of DevOps Engineer began.

Updated: 2025-04-20

I'm writing this post in retrospective; naturally, in 2018 the last thing that would have come to my mind was to write tech blogs of any sorts.

While still studying telecommunications at the Warsaw University of Technology, I got the job of Associate DevOps Engineer at Viacom (now Paramount) and got my hands on AWS and Jenkins (and a MacBook too), starting May 2018. I had no idea if I was gonna cut it, but as it turned out I fit right in. Great people and a fancy office too.

There are two particular memories that I have about that month. One is when I was chilling with my colleagues and a bottle of craft beer at the rooftop terrace at 5 p.m. on the last Friday when my first serious paycheck arrived. I had no idea what to do with all that money. Preceding that however, the other memory is when I was trying my best to fit in and going out for lunch with everybody else, which required around 20-30 PLN every day – given that my bank balance was about 400 PLN when I started, I almost got down to zero before that paycheck fixed me up.

Oh, and the cake culture. I forgot to lock my laptop when I stepped away for a moment and when I came back it was locked, but apparently I declared on the #all-at-warsaw-office Hipchat channel that I will bring a cake the next day. Naturally it was embarrassing, but I did bake a delicious brownie and that gained me some office cred as a side effect.
